K and N have been begging to take gymnastics. They don't seem to realize that they don't come from "gymnast" stock.
In grade 3, I took gymnastics. My mother volunteered (as required) one evening. The teacher observed me trying to get over the vaulting horse, shook her head and commented to the effect, "Look at that one". My mother nodded wisely and admitted, "That one's mine".
In grade 10 (mandatory) gym class, I was determined to get over the vaulting horse again. The gym teacher promised to spot me. I took the first run at the springboard but I was too long. The second run, I was too short. I decided I'd give it one more try. Meanwhile, the teacher prepared to spot me. I cleared the horse, knocking both of us onto the mat.
Of gymnast stock? Not me. So far, neither K nor N seem promising gymnasts but they are determined. (Apparently, their determination has been inherited from me).
Perhaps I should introduce them to the Ross Sisters? Perhaps they would understand then?
You crack me up.
ReplyDeleteI saw that video recently on Facebook. Still makes me smile.
I hear where you are coming from. When I was 4 or 5 my mom took me to dance lessons. I don't remember how long I was in it, but I never saw a recital. Years later I asked her why she took me out of dance lessons and she said, "You never practiced." When tried out for cheerleader in college and didn't make it, she said, "Well, you were never very coordinated." As an adult, I decided to prove her wrong. I was an aerobic dance instructor for many years and recently was in an adult tap and jazz class that included recitals and competitions. I am glad I didn't let past experiences keep me back.
Good for you for letting the girls try gymnastics. Hope they have fun.
Sooo funny, MJ! Look out though, once they want to start gymnastics all manner of sports my follow! ;o) Happy Days ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteI loved how you used parenthesis to point out your Mother did not go unless it was required! Tee hee.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's these "hurdles" in life that help prepare us for bigger challenges. I'm sure with K and N's inherited determination they will have no problems...whatever leaps they may take.
Wow, I'm feeling pretty philosophical this morning! LOL.
Checked out the Ross sisters...they sure are cute! Ross was my Swedish Grandmother's maiden name!
Check out canadiansportforlife.ca and the long term athlete development model. They identify gymnastics as a foundational sport for other activites throughout one's lifetime.
