It's that time of year: the beginning of school. This morning, K woke up around 4 a.m. wondering whether it was morning yet as she was anxious to go to school to start grade 2. N attended her kindergarten orientation this afternoon. Both K & N took apples for their teachers this afternoon. They both had a great first day and are excited to return to school.
I never realized how much of parenting was an act of self-discipline. In the early years, self-discipline consisted mostly of eating good and healthy food groups. Now, as we start the school year, I am bracing myself to do the daily reading (in French) with K.
Last week,
Today, I registered K in Kumon so that she can practice and improve her math skills. I'm hoping that she'll see the fruits of her labour herself so that she will develop self-discipline. Yup, I know: wishful thinking. My dh has volunteered to take her to Kumon class once per week.
With all this self-discipline that I am exercising and modelling, you'd think that I'd be able to climb mountains. Nicht. I suspect my personal self-discipline is fully consumed in parenting.

Another new year begins... 2nd grade & kindergarten.... Hope this year will be full of discoveries, challenges and lots of fun too--for you & your girls. ;o) Happy Days ((HUGS)) P.S. I will try not to post as many food photos... try being the word, for we love our food, you know!
ReplyDeleteYes, all my self discipline goes into packing lunches everyday for my son so he never has to taste a school lunch. If you don't know what lunches are like in the US just check out Jamie Oliver Food Revolution. I have yet to find anything redeeming in a lunch made at my school in 6+ years. The rest of my energy has gone to the promise that he will have a decent breakfast every morning as well. Tack in time spent going to soccer practices/games 4 nights a week and dance classes 2 nights a week (soon to tack on Sunday afternoons) and I can't remember much for myself.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the new school year.
There's nothing like the beginning of a school year to restore discipline to a whole family!
ReplyDeleteMy self-discipline dissolves when faced with chocolate of any kind.
ReplyDeleteYou are way ahead of me in all avenues, MJ. You are accomplishing much!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about how much self-discipline is required in parenting! It's tough!
